The University of North Carolina is currently developing and implementing professional science master's programs across many of the 16-campuses that make up the university. These professional science master’s degrees, or PSMs, are two year degree programs that deepen the knowledge of the student in
natural sciences or mathematics and provide coursework for students to succeed in positions outside the traditional academic career pathway.
Since 1997, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation has provided funding to several universities throughout the United States to help establish professional master’s degrees as terminal degree in natural sciences and mathematics. In June 2005, the University of North Carolina received a $329,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to help in the implementation and institutionalize the PSM degree across the UNC system.
